Philadelphia Home Sellers Forgoing For Sale Signs?

Philly.com published an article  that said, real estate agents had noticed a trend of home sellers opting to NOT put a for sale sign in front of their property.  Agents from cities throughout the country are quoted in the article as having seen the same phenomenon.  The reasons home sellers are forgoing for sale signs are as follows:

  • Some home sellers feel too many signs in the neighborhood conveys a problem with the area.
  • Some home sellers don’t want their friends, neighbors and family to conclude that selling now means they’re in financial distress.
  • Some sellers who’ve already moved out may view a for sale sign as advertising to burglars that a property is vacant and an easy target.

I think this is absurd.  Realtors work tirelessly to get signage because the calls and leads are the highest quality buyer leads anywhere.  The calls that come in from for sale signs usually buyers who are standing in front of the property or walked by it and called the number on the sign.  In a depressed housing market, and especially for home sellers in financial distress, it would seem to me that getting the message out to as many people would be the best course of action.  Using a for sale sign reaches the greatest possible audience and so not using one doesn’t make sense.
