We’re now a third of the way through October (also known as the best month of the year), and I know I personally am basking in the autumnal goodness of it all. Falling leaves, brisk temperatures, pumpkin spice everything… and Halloween just around the corner! Grownups don’t get to go trick or treating like the kids do, so we need to make our own spooky fun. There are costume parties and haunted house attractions to visit, as per usual, but this year in Philadelphia there is something new that is sure to get you in the spirit. After all, what says “Halloween” more than carved pumpkins, also known as jack o’lanterns?

The Glow: A Jack O’Lantern Experience, is taking place this month at 5201 Parkside Avenue. On the property are some 5,000 lit carved pumpkins. They range from traditional designs like grinning faces, cats, and witches to celebrity visages like Beyonce and Ben Franklin. The pumpkins used are a mixture of real pumpkins and craft models cast from the forms of real ones. The jack o’lanterns take between two hours to two DAYS to carve! Additionally, artisans have given seasonal gourds fantastic transformations into items like drums, motorcycles, and jellyfish! There are pumpkin artists on sight to help you whip up the jack o’lantern of your dreams, or you can buy one pre-carved from The Glow.

The Glow is a walking tour that takes about 30-45 minutes. Tickets are sold in 30 minute intervals. The trail is 1/3 of a mile long, so be sure to wear your walking shoes. To spice up your experience, seasonal snacks and beverages will be available onsite. The event is not meant to be scary at all, so it is a good bet for families and children of all ages. Kids aged two and under are free; admission tickets range from $16 – $22. Tickets are available only through advance purchase and are non-refundable, but you can give one to a friend if you discover that you can’t go.
