Washington Square, originally named Southeast Square by William Penn and Thomas Holme, is a park in Center City, Philadelphia and one of the five original planned squares laid out on the city original city grid. In recent years Washington Square has become one of Center City’s most popular and energetic neighborhoods. The expansion of Midtown Village’s boutiques, restaurants, and night life has been an instrumental part of this growth. Washington Square or Washington Square West, for real estate purposes, is bounded by 8th Street on the East, Broad Street on the West, Market Street on the North and South Street on the South.
